Husband Coached Childbirth: The Bradley Method of Natural Childbirth
Robert A. Bradley, Marjie Hathaway, Jay Hathaway, James Hathaway, 2008.
This read is not only informational, it's pretty fun too. MD Bradley has a great sense of humor and has a really unique way of expressing the keys of natural childbirth!
Doctor Bradley was one of the first Doctors to support husbands presence in the birth room. He found that with the husband (or partner) by her side, mama was much more relaxed and able to birth baby without interventions. But when he started training the dad's to "take over" and do the coaching....it was inspiring!
Some Main Ideas:
* Birthing Like a Mammal
Bradley concentrates much of this book on the facts of other laboring mammals. How do they have their litters of pups, kittens, rabbits, a foel?
By considering other mammals birthing habits and instincts Bradley began to realize some key aspects of natural birth. Although human's may not have the same instinctual cues while giving birth, we can learn them!
* "Daddy Helped Born Me"
The other largest idea that is threaded throughout this book, is the key role the father plays in his child's birth. Daddy matters. Even if he is just a presence in the room--he matters. But Bradley calls fathers to be more then just onlookers, he calls them into participation! And with great explanations, how-to's and the why's of "Husband Coached Childbirth", Bradley welcome's the father into the delivery room to "born" their own children.
Bradley goes through the different stages of labor, but he also goes into depth on what to expect of your wife during and after baby is born. There are great resources and thoughts on other subjects as well!
I'd say, READ THIS BOOK!
I've finished the whole gamut of Bradley Method's classes!
And what can I say, it was all I had hoped for.
I'm struggling how to wrap this amazing 10-12 week class into a concise little post. (because, I know, who really wants to read a long blogpost? "Not I" said the pregnant mom!)
Take a journey with your local Bradley Method Instructor(s) as they take you through the motions of labor: the emotional sign posts, the physical know-how, the tidbits you might not ever come across in your average hospital class. Natural childbirth is best described in this class as, "unmedicated, un-interveined and spontaneous". You'll also be taught that some of best ways to work with your body in labor is by, "breathing, relaxing and having a great coach" (being informed is big too!)
You will come to understand the stages of labor and what you (or your loved one) will most need at these points. You will practice. You will have accountability (always good when your on that special high protein diet for expecting mamas!) You will get your questions answer and you'll make friends!
These classes are personal, you get to know the other couples with you. You are on a journey together! I loved what one expecting mama said at the end of our final night, "Can we all meet up when the babies are here?"
I absolutely adore our instructors here in Cheyenne, even more, now that I have gone through their class. Don't miss out, contact a Bradley instructor!
I've finished the book too! Husband Coached Childbirth. (check out my review here)
